Kids learn how to make fabric flowers!

Okay, I don't know how I am going to do this but I am.

I am going to let my kids run loose on my fabric flower box. I have a specific box, that I made for them.
They have watched me long enough to see how it's done.

Tsumami Kanzashi (Folded fabric flower)

learnhowtomakefabricflowers.com
? Did you know that artisans undergo
5-10 years of learning the art of flower
folding!
Tsumami Kanzashi or folded fabric hair ornament was worn by Japanese Geisha's. These fabric flowers were usually worn with other hair ornaments according to Wikipedia.
Originally they were 1" pieces of fabric which made up one petal. After creating maybe up to 75 and some how combining them together.
I bet these were beautiful to look at. I know I would be staring at the beautiful creation of the Tsumami Kanzashi flower.

There are several different types of Kanzashi. In fact there are 7 different types. But the one that you make with fabric and turn into a beautiful fabric flower would be the Tsumami Kanzashi.

Over my time in making fabric flowers. I am not able to say I am a professional Kanzashi flower folder. The one part that always stumps me is trying to string the petals together. I'd say that alone is an art worth learning.
So I will probably continue to try and get it right. Find the right way to do. Otherwise forever be non Kanzashi flower folder.

What do you think? Can you fold the Tsumami Kanzashi?
How difficult do you think it would be? Here's hoping I master the art of Tsumami Kanzashi.

Artificial Flowers and fabrics

When I was creating fabric flowers, I had to investigate the structure of flowers.

While investigating, I came across an article in Wikipedia about artificial flowers and the many different materials used.

Silk flowers more importantly were created due to the fact they looked more life-like in comparison to other materials.

There were other materials used like soap, clay, polyester, nylon/stocking material, glass and plastic.

Oh to be a crafter in the ancient times. Where you relied on just your creative spirit and ingenuity to make artificial flowers hehehe.

? Did you know that fabric flowers can also be made out
of flax too!
Anyway, there are several different places to find your fabrics. I know for a fact that back in the old days they would have recycled a lot of the resources.

I mean just watching the movie 'The Wind In The Willows' where the character Scarlet became so poor she uses the drapes to make the most beautiful dress I've ever seen her wear.

Makes you wonder how many drapes you've thrown out or sold when you could have made millions of fabric flowers out of it. But not only fabric flowers it could be anything really.

Just something to think about next time you need to find fabric for any crafting project.
